This has happened to me recently.
Before I go into the details, I want to acknowledge that I have removed most of my recent blog posts due to some page errors - I will try to fix them, and you will be able to see all of them again soon.
Let's begin now.
To explain to you what exactly happened, I will have to give you a little background on my life and explain to you the hierarchy of the company I work for.
So I am a lawyer and I have been working in the immigration law field for more than 3 years now.
In my office, after the founder, I am the senior-most person. We are a team of 13 members. I was promoted recently and now I lead the operations of the company. Therefore, every department of the company falls under me. I have to ensure that the company runs smoothly and there are no hurdles faced by any of the departments. Basically need to ensure the safety, professionalism, and much more.
The departments we have include legal operations, marketing, finance, and sales (I work in the service industry - you must have figured out by now). All these 4 fall under my radar.
Every department has 3-4 members.
The other day, you know that India faced an air crash in Ahmedabad, and we wanted to cover that news as that was something very emotional, and we wanted to acknowledge how deeply we felt bad. Our digital marketing guy (let's name him "Sahil" for this story) had already created the posts and reels for that day and logged out as his job of the day was done (but he is responsible for covering any major news/update that immigration authorities release that day).
Our founder gave him a call and asked him to cover the Ahmedabad story. He logged in and was preparing the post. Sahil then gave me a call, along with the other girl who was helping him with the post. He wanted my approval on the post so that he could post it and log out again.
I honestly had not liked the post as it was not that emotional and was very basic. I told him the same and asked him to make it better. I swear to god his words were, "Don't eat my brain, I am already done for the day, and if you have so many problems with the post, you do it yourself".
I was shocked to the core. Bhai, are you for real? I asked you to correct it, and you are lashing out at me in front of the other girl? First of all we have a 6-year age gap, secondly, I am your senior, and thirdly, is this the professionalism you follow?
I felt insulted, and I left the call without uttering a single word. I was done with that guy.
2 weeks passed by, and I did not even bother to talk to him or complain to the authorities. Because I did not want to make any issue out of it, and he was not even a serious person to pay attention to.
Last week on Friday (20 June, 2025), this person posted a post in our marketing group for approval again. I said again because since we (the founder and I) did not approve it on Thursday, he did not post. I was furious as we missed posting the post and reel on our social media platform.
I questioned him about this and told him that you can post them as he knows the content, our firm, and he relies on official websites from the authority. He is literate enough to know what he enters in the post, so he can just post it. Plus, this guy has been working for us for more than 1.6 years now.
This person in the group, OFFICIAL COMPANY GROUP, lashed at me, saying that I am here to design and not to understand or not responsible for posting the content. I can design and I can post as well without approval, but make sure that I am not held responsible for posting the content for which I do not possess the knowledge.
I am like, are you running away from the responsibility or what? We have other work, and sometimes we are not in a position to open the group and approve the content. And instead of being polite and respectful, this person is being so pathetic and rude? There's a way to communicate. There's a way of acknowledging the mistake and talking about it.
We are giving you the liberty to design the content the way you want, and not to wait for approvals. Just read what's there on the site and your design. As long as the news matches, you should not be worried about a thing. But Sahil, being Sahil, was obviously not a person to listen to anyone because professionalism and manners are not in his dictionary. The best part was his responses to me in the group were ChatGPT-based, which was a hilarious thing.
I mean, you're a person who does not own your own responses, boy!
Anyway, so after this rude response to me, I got furious as it harmed my reputation in front of my subordinates, and I cannot take any statements that harm my self-respect. I let you get away with that call thing, but this was a major hit, and I am not a person to let you walk over me again. I gave him right then, and there and said that we have other things to do? We always support you and give you feedback. Now that we are growing and you have been here for quite some time, we give you the liberty and blah blah. Dude, we have given you official websites and news platforms from where you just have to see the news and create content. How difficult is English to read and understand? Can't you just check and then create the post? This person says the same thing again, and I then got busy with him on Friday.
On Saturday morning, which is an off for us (Sat and Sun off <3), I open the company's internal communication platform just to see if all is good in the company, and I see a big message from our Founder (Sweet person as he understood my point). He asked Sahil to have a polite attitude and a respectable approach at work. After reading his text, I was like, let everybody know what this (Sahil) is like. I described what happened on the call the other day and asked Sahil to behave himself. I also told him that I won't tolerate such kind of approach towards me or anybody else in the company.
He then, maybe, understood, as I never heard back from him again. And we do not even talk to each other now. No apologies received as expected.
The other day, by mistake, our Founder typed please write that offer valid from 1 June, 2025 to 31st June, 2025". Clearly, this was an error. Our Sahil bro has copy-pasted and when asked said that I typed what you gave to me. Maybe you should read what you type. (Another example of how disrespectful someone can be at work.)
Today's generation, I guess, does not know the importance of "Work Ethics". Polite attitude and hard work take you miles in your career.
Let me know your thoughts honestly, and let's discuss professionalism.
Let me know if you feel I was wrong anywhere here. I will be happy to take the feedback, unlike Sahil!
Omg! How rude can someone be? These GenZ people are so difficult to deal with. Maybe this Sahil guy doesn’t need good letter of experience when he leaves or salary anymore. Why isn’t he fired by now?
ReplyDeleteHe is on notice period currently. And yes, GenZ people are not only difficult but they highly rely on AI.
DeleteHey, I loved your story. Post such content often. Also, you’re not wrong.
