There are two types of travelers in this world: the planners and the “let’s just go yaar, we’ll figure it out” tribe. I proudly belong to the second category. This story? It's proof.
Last summer, my friends and I planned an impromptu trip to Himachal Pradesh. When I say “planned,” I mean we booked the tickets at midnight, packed at 6 AM, and were on the train by 9. No itinerary. Just vibes and Vicks Vaporub (because pahadon mein thand toh hogi na).
The Arrival: Slippers, Slopes, and Silliness
Our first pitstop was McLeod Ganj. The weather was misty, my mood was peppy, and my footwear—well, let’s just say I made the bold choice of wearing chappals in the hills.
As we climbed a trail toward Bhagsu Falls, surrounded by tall pine trees and the occasional selfie-taking tourist, I suddenly felt a gust of wind—dramatic, cinematic—and... whoosh. One slipper flew off my foot and tumbled down the slope like it was auditioning for DDLJ.
Cue the awkward hopping and dramatic reactions. “My chappal! MY CHAPPAL!” I screamed while my friends howled with laughter. Some kind passerby even offered me his slipper (only one foot, mind you). That gesture still lives rent-free in my heart.
When Momos Betrayed Me
Now no hill trip is complete without momos, right? But here’s the twist—these weren’t your usual steamed Delhi-style momos. These were “Volcanic Lava Spicy” momos. I took one bite, and my soul left my body. I drank 2 liters of water and said goodbye to my taste buds for 48 hours.
The next day, during a 4-hour bus ride on curvy mountain roads, my stomach did its own version of a Garba. I prayed to every hill deity for strength. Lesson: don’t challenge pahadi food if you’re not ready for the consequences.
The Unofficial Photo Shoot
At one point, we reached a viewpoint that made everyone go, “Waaah!” So naturally, it turned into a full-blown photoshoot. I posed like a Bollywood heroine with wind in my hair (thanks to the moving bus nearby), tried the classic jump pose, and even recreated “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” scenes.
Did I slip on a rock while trying to pose mid-laugh? Yes.
Did my friend capture it in HD? Yes.
Did that photo become my most-liked Instagram post? Also yes.
Unexpected Kindness and Warmth
What I love about such chaotic travel is that amidst all the mess, there’s always a magical moment that makes it worth it. On our last night, the guesthouse owner’s daughter brought us steaming chai and said, “Didi, aap bahut funny ho.” (Sister, you’re very funny.)
It was such a pure moment. No filters, no Instagram tags—just warmth, chai, and laughter under the stars.
A Lesson in Letting Go
That trip reminded me that some of the best moments in life come unplanned. Losing a slipper, crying over momos, laughing over horrible dance moves during a local fair—these are the memories that last longer than any luxury hotel stay.
Would I recommend hiking in slippers again? Absolutely not.
Would I do the whole trip all over again, chaos and all? In a heartbeat.
✨ Final Thought
Travel isn't just about ticking off places; it's about collecting silly stories that make you laugh years later. So here’s to more spontaneous getaways, random detours, and moments that don’t always go according to plan—but still end up being perfect.
